Enduro is a very exciting sport that combines the thrill of off-road riding with the excitement of a real race. However, as with many popular activities, it is a discipline that risks being misunderstood. And potential bikers may be discouraged from approaching this discipline. So we thought we would dispel the 7 most common enduro myths.
Myth 1: Enduro is only for experienced riders
False: We cannot deny that enduro can be challenging, but despite this it is accessible to most riders. There are many initiatives that cater for beginners, offering guided tours with experienced instructors who can help you gradually develop your skills. Initially, you should join a beginners’ group or consider a dedicated tour. This way you will see progress very quickly.
Myth 2: You need an expensive bike to do Enduro
False: There are clearly high-end enduro bikes, and for professionals or experienced riders having a high-performance bike really makes a difference. But to get started or just to have fun enduro riding, you don’t need to spend a fortune. There are many inexpensive options that offer excellent reliability and handling. If you are a beginner, a used motorbike is the right thing for you. Alternatively, you can consider a rental for your very first rides. That way you can make sure that enduro is something that really interests you.
Myth 3: Enduro is dangerous and uncontrolled
False: Like any sport, enduro involves risks. But there are safety measures that can reduce them considerably. The first is to wear the right protections, including helmets, bibs, knee pads and boots. Here you can actually spend a few extra euros. And then it’s also up to us, each rider should ride according to his or her skill level, and a guided tour is a good way to provide a safe, controlled and above all calibrated experience. No need to overdo it, enduro is learnt step by step, outing after outing.
Myth 4: All Enduro trails are the same
False: This is the easiest of the 7 enduro myth to dispel. The beauty of enduro riding lies in the variety of trails. Different locations offer unique terrain, from rocky mountain trails to sandy river beds. Each route presents its own set of challenges, but on the other hand also offers unique views. It is essential that riders research and choose routes that match their skill level and preferences. In the beginning they will clearly choose the easiest trails and then slowly increase the degree of difficulty.
Myth 5: It is not a team sport
False: In theory it is an individual sport, but just in theory! Nothing could be further from the truth. Enduro riding is almost always practised in groups, with friends or as part of organised tours. Riding in company not only enhances the experience, but also provides a support system and camaraderie that many riders appreciate. Often, in the most complicated passages, you create what is called ‘The Pushing Company’ (not sure this does make any sense in English) to help each other out. What can we say about the lunches or dinners after the ride where we share experiences and remember the funny episodes of the day just gone by!
Myth 6: Enduro is just a hobby
False: Although many people consider enduro riding to be a hobby, i.e. a recreational activity, in reality there are also competitive opportunities. There are many competitions and events that take place all over the world and we have talked about them here. So if one wants to test one’s skills and has a competitive spirit, enduro can certainly become a real sport.
Myth 7: Enduro is only for young people
False: Enduro is an inclusive sport, suitable for riders of all ages. Many riders continue to enjoy the sport well into old age. In fact, it is not uncommon for a rider, after years of road riding, to decide at some point to switch in enduro. During our enduro tours in Croatia we see a lot of people and their ages are very varied. We have had riders over 60 years old leaving younger guys behind! When it comes to passion, there is no right age or wrong age. Enduro riders are very inclusive, and it’s great to see that different generations, through a sport like this, can speak the same language.
Understanding the reality of enduro encourages more enthusiasts to try it. By dispelling these 7 common enduro myths, we hope to inspire both novice and experienced riders to embrace the thrill of enduro adventures.
